Canadian DND to Purchase KME Air Transportable ARFF’s
August 19, 2010
Canada’s Department of National Defense (DND) has placed an initial order for four (4) KME FORCE air transportable 4x4 ARFF vehicles. Deliveries will begin in March 2011.
The trucks include 5,000 liters of water, 340 liters of foam, and 250lbs of dry chemical with a 2000gpm pump, roof monitor and high performance bumper turret. Due to the possible harsh climate conditions a 7.5kw diesel generator and winterization package for -40 to +40C degree environments has been specified. The units also include a KME chassis with Twin Disc transmission, and CAT C-13 525 hp engine. The apparatus feature an innovative coil spring over live rigid axle configuration allowing for superior wheel movement, but fewer moving parts resulting in the perfect balance between ease of maintenance and performance. All are fully air transportable on a C-130 Hercules aircraft.
KME FORCE cabs and bodies with integrated water tanks are constructed of Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) and offer significant weight savings, low center of gravity, high tensile strength, and superior corrosion protection.
These KME’s, sold by Fort Garry Fire Trucks in Winnipeg, will provide both ARFF and Structural Fire-Fighting capability at forward operating locations and at Canadian Forces operations worldwide with minimal logistics support. They are intended to serve in severe applications such as deployment to the extreme northern airfields to support fighter and transport planes and helicopter operations, as well as deployment to tropical and desert regions. The KME FORCE units also include an industry best in ease and timeliness of configuring the unit from firefighting to air transport ready.
